MUMBAI: William Shakespeare’s classic play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has always remained very fascinating for the filmmakers and that is why we have seen so many depictions of it — be it Hollywood or Bollywood.
But Ekta Kapoor has decided to bring a completely different twist in the story by making the gay version of this play, ‘Hindustan Times’ reported.
However, Ekta and other producers on this project realize that it’s a controversial script.
A close source revealed, “The makers, including Danish, realised that since their film deals with homosexuality, they might have trouble as Section 377 criminalises gay sex. That is why they’ve decided to rework the story.”
Even there was news that Ekta, using her influence, has sent the script to Indian censor board for approval.
But the source clarified, “That was false news as there is no such provision. The board only watches movies, it does not approve scripts.”
Ekta’s production house even asked the viewers to express their opinion about this ambitious project.
“They have been getting many letters asking them not to go ahead with it. They’re afraid that it might get embroiled in controversy as same-sex relationships are not accepted widely in India. If the rewrite isn’t up to the mark, they might shelve the project,” disclosed the source.
So until now, the gay version of Romeo and Juliet in Bollywood seems impossible. Let’s see if Ekta and team decide to go ahead with it or not.
