MIAMI: An unidentified gunmen described by one witness as decked out “like Rambo” shot and wounded six people at a FedEx facility and then apparently killed himself Tuesday in the US state of Georgia, police said.
Authorities were alerted shortly before 6 am (1000 GMT) about the shooting in the city of Kennesaw, 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Atlanta, according to the Cobb County Police Department.
At least six people were hospitalized with three in critical condition, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reported.
Two of the victims have life-threatening injuries and one is on a ventilator. Four will need hospitalization, the paper said, citing Michael Nitzken, a doctor with WellStar Kennestone Hospital where the patients are being treated.
He said it was likely that the critical patients were shot at “close range.”
According to police, “the suspect in this case is deceased from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound.”
“The officers are still ‘sweeping’ the area to confirm that there are no additional threats to anybody or officers,” it said in a statement.
Witness Liza Aiken, a FedEx employee, said the assailant was a loader at the facility and looked like “Rambo.”
“He had an assault rifle. He had bullets strapped to his chest like Rambo. I mean he looked like he was heading into war,” she told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
She was also quoted by the newspaper as saying she was first alerted to the suspect when she heard a “clink” and saw a dropped knife on the floor in front of him.
FedEx said it was aware of the situation.
“Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our team members, first responders and others affected. FedEx is cooperating with authorities,” it said in a statement.
