Bipasha Basu Interview

She fit, fabulous, has broken free from all shackles and is now here to unleash! Well, these may be the names of Bipasha Basu’s fitness DVDs she’s launched till date, but the actress is much more than just a movie star. So here’s bringing you a brawny conversation with none other than Bips, where she tells us about her fitness DVD, relationships and all about it.

How is your latest fitness DVD different as compared to your previous ones?
The first DVD, Fit & Fabulous You was a functional training DVD. It was a 25 minutes routine that was about strength, cardio and abs. It focused on everything from toning to weight loss. The second one was Break Free that was a dance workout routine. It revolved primarily around weight loss and the multi muscle movement regime. The third one, I wanted it to be a strong DVD because I wanted to target men mostly and also women. It’s a combination of cardio vascular exercises and biometrics. Generally in India, especially the men don’t want to work on their lower body. They have big torsos and very skinny bottoms. So in order to be strong and attractive, your lower body has to look good. So anyone who wants to have a Brad Pitt’s butt, please try this out! (Laughs)

How has the response been to your previous fitness DVD?
It’s fantastic. They sell a lot. The kind of feedback I get that they’ve lost so much of weight and are looking forward to more DVDs, that’s what matters. There’s always a pressure because people want more. Because vie spent a lot of time doing all this and it’s not the only thing I do. So I can come up with just one DVD a year. So I will try to come up with two a year.

What has been the biggest challenge for you when it comes to fitness?
My challenge would be my physical handicap I have. Its osteoarthritis. My knees hurt always. The only way I can work out is through physiotherapy and weight training for my legs.

What form of exercise comes very naturally to you?
Weight-training. It’s not easy but challenging. I realized there’s so much myth in India, especially amongst women. They feel they will develop muscles. It’s not possible. There are very few women who can genetically build muscles quickly. I am one of them. With weight-training you actually burn fat.

What food do you land up eating in spite of knowing its bad for you?
Oh yes! Sweets. Always. I’m a Bengali. But I’m very particular. I eat a lot and then stop. But mithai is my only vice ever. Also I love to eat rice but I gave it up 10 years ago. Now I eat rice only on my birthday.

What is the most attractive physical feature to you in a man?
For me, the butt. I’m a butt girl! (Laughs) The six packs don’t appeal much to me. It’s just overrated. If you don’t have a good lower body, it does nothing.

Have you trained any male celebs/shared tips with any?
I workout in Jackky Bhagnani’s gym. He’s got a fantastic gym. Even Ranbir comes there. And everybody is in such new forms of workout. They do a lot of functional training which is great. When I see it, I’m like ‘Wow!’

So do you end up getting any tips?
Nobody dare give me any tip. Actually they think that nobody can give me any tip. The only person who could give me a tip is Salman.

Name the top 5 fittest Male bodies according to you in Bollywood
Vidyut Jamwal is very fit. His life’s goal is about being strong. And everybody in their own way is trying to look fit. The pressure is there so everyone’s fit. If you put people to test only then you can know.

What do you think is the most neglected area of men’s fitness?
Lower body amongst Indian men. Worldwide people are aware. But not in India. Here it’s only about having these huge biceps and scrawny lower body.

But Salman too appears similar to what youre saying about Indian men.
Salman is very fit. He has these strong legs. That’s why he roams around in tiny shorts.

What is one area where you think men have it easier when it comes to fitness?
Their body reacts much faster than us.

What can a man do right to woo Bipasha Basu?
Make me laugh.

Your first crush, do you remember him?
Keanu Reeves. I use to think he’s my husband. The poste was next to my bedside and I use to think I’m married to him. Then much later I learnt he’s gay. And I was shattered that my first husband was gay. (Laughs).

Of the new generation – who do you think is the most eligible bachelor (Ranbir/Ranveer/Any other)?
Are they eligible bachelors! I think they are just bachelors. (Laughs). Just joking. Ranbir is good friend. Ranveer I don’t know him at all. And I don’t know what makes a person eligible. If you’re single then I guess you are eligible.

If you could go back in time, which actor do you think you would be most charmed by?
Salman Khan. He was also on the posters at home. I don’t think he’ll like it when he hears it but that’s how it was.

Brains or Brawns – if you could choose only one and why?
Brains for sure.

One fitness mistake women make which they can overcome
Starving. They all think that when you starve, you will lose weight. May be you’ll lose some water, get dark circles, look unhealthy, have loose flab. So starvations is a complete no.

Are you a foodie?
I’m a big foodie and if I don’t get food, I get very angry. At home the contents are controlled like oil etc. But when I go outside, I eat almost everything.

A journalist once called you fat. So would you like to thank her?
I don’t remember her name but definitely the tabloid. It said ‘Bipasha Basu gets fat’. And yes, I was fat at that point. The reason I went into fitness was not her but because I got osteoarthritis that year. It was that handicap that made me stronger.

The first few days of workout are very difficult. Was it the same for you?
Yes. I remember I was shooting for No Entry in Mauritius and every actor was fit. We were in Mauritius. I didn’t want to do the film but was literally coaxed into it. The first day I went onto the treadmill, I didn’t have the right shoes. And that time Salman would just look at me and say, ‘Yes, Bipasha is doing something about it.’ In fact in my DVD there are celeb bytes. And Salman has referred to this Mauritius incident. He’s spoken on how he’s amazed to see me where I am from where I was then.

Who’s the fittest actor of 2013? Farhan Akhtar, Sonu Sood, Aamir Khan
Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. I’ve seen him train even before he started working on this film. He’s very dedicated towards fitness.

Who’s the fittest actress of 2013? Katrina Kaif, Deepika padukone, Priyanka Chopra
Deepika because it’s imbibed in her from childhood as she comes from a sports background.

Which is your favorite workout song?
‘Angrezi Beat’. I also like to hear rock music. I’m quite moody. At times I would also hear ‘Ishqwala Love’.

Moving away from fitness, when it comes to Bollywood, do you thing two co-actresses can ever be long-term friends?
They can be but nobody has so much time. You hardly get time for your own family in this business.

Are you satisfied when you look back at your Bollywood career?
I am a very content person. I never planned my journey. And whatever I got my way, I’ve been fortunate. I am not the aggressive kind to be an achiever. I haven’t even worked with any of the Khans except for Salman. So it’s been great whatever came my way and I haven’t been in camps or made friends with anyone just for films.

All the men in Bollywood have been wanting to work with you.
I remember, Amitji refused to play my father in a film as he wanted to be paired romantically opposite me. I’ve never had butterflies in my stomach before performing with anyone, but with Amitji, it was crazy!

Your love life has always been under scrutiny. What’s your take on that?
If you have to be in this business, you should be able to bear the brunt of it all.

So will you tell us when you get married?
Of course I will. I celebrate my birthday in a big way so for my wedding I will definitely tell everyone about it. I am open book. Only thing is there should be a credibility in my heart that I can talk about a certain relationship.

Do you regret your past relationships?
No. I had my learnings from it, so I don’t regret it. It’s only made me wiser.
