NEW DELHI: At least 10 persons lost their lives while 57 received injuries as a passenger train derailed 110 kilometers away in south of Indian Mumbai, reports said.
Rescue activities are underway as teams using gas cutters to open doors to evacuate the trapped persons present inside derailed coaches.
A police officer told Associated Press (AP) that the engine and four coaches jumped the tracks near Roha station.
Big cranes are also being used during the rescue operation while at least 57 injured passengers has been shifted to a hospital.
Railway operations has been suspended following the accidents while investigation for inquiring the cause of incident is underway.
According to Indian media reports, 12 people were killed and at least 30 were injured when four compartments of the Diva-Sawantwadi Passenger, along with the engine, were derailed between Nagothane and Roha stations in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Sunday morning.
Police said the incident occurred in a tunnel near Nidi village, on the Konkan Railway route, when the engine of the train and four bogies derailed at around 10 am.
The injured passengers are being rushed to Roha for medical treatment, police said.
The reports added that it is the second derailment on the Konkan route in the last one month.
