ISLAMABAD: The meeting of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has been summoned on May 27. The ministry of law has given its opinion that it cannot interfere in the job of PEMRA.
According to spokesman of PEMRA here on Friday, the decision to convene meeting was taken after legal opinion from law ministry. The ministry of law has given its opinion that it cannot interfere in the job of PEMRA.
The notification for attending the meeting has been dispatched to all members. The meeting will deliberate on the opinion sent by law ministry to information ministry over the case of Geo Television and Karachi Council of Complaints.
Sources said the issue of show-cause notice to three private members would also come under consideration during the meeting.
It is pertinent to mention here that five members of the PEMRA suspended the licenses of Geo. Federal government has issued show cause notices to three honorary members of the PEMRA for calling meeting regarding the major private TV channel Geo.
It is worth mentioning here that five honorary members of the PEMRA called meeting on May 20 and issued orders for suspension of the licenses of Geo News, Geo Tez and Geo Entertainment.
Israr Abbasi, Mian Shams and Fareeha Iftikhar are the members of the PEMRA who have been issued show cause notices by the federal government and the other two members are Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Ismail shah and former police officer Pervez Rathor.
Fareeha Iftikhar told BBC that she has not so far received any notice from any authority or government. She said that she is honorary member of the PEMRA and not servant to anybody to be issued notice.
Fareeha Iftikhar said that she was appointed by the former president Asif Ali Zardari , saying that executive authority can take action against the honorary members of the PEMRA and no bureaucrat can issue notice to her.
