Viber, Whatsapp, Tango might get blocked in Sindh - 15 May 2014

KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a high level meeting to discuss law and order situation of Sindh, particularly Karachi, here on Wednesday. The important decisions taken in the meeting included eliminating the problem of illegal/unregistered sims and probability of blocking social media apps like Viber, Whatsapp, Tango etc.

Unregistered/Illegal Sims:

PM and all the attendees of the meeting were firm on eliminating the curse of unregistered and illegal SIMs. In this regard, new SIMs will be issued only via biometric verification system from now on.

PM was furious at concerned authorities for their laziness in dealing with the crucial issue of unregistered and illegal SIMs.

Blocking Viber, Whatsapp, Tango in Sindh:

Sindh government has asked Federal government twice before to block Viber, Whatsapp and Tango in the province as miscreants are misusing these apps for criminal activities.

And the same suggestion was raised in yesterday’s meeting as well. Law enforcement agencies did not look very pleased with the way criminals are making use of these apps for their benefit.

However, there has been no final decision taken regarding this matter. Blocking of Viber, Whatsapp, Tango remained just a suggestion in yesterday’s high profile meeting.

It is interesting to note here that IP addresses in Pakistan are not based on geo-location, which makes it impossible to block a certain app or website in one particular province or city of Pakistan.

So if government ever planned to block any application or website, the whole nation is bound to suffer.
