From a negative shade to a positive one – the actor talks about her show, character, her co-star and more
We caught up with Adaa Khan and Alan Kapoor – the lead of Sony Pal’s new show Pia Basanti Re. We could immediately see the connection and bond between the two. Initially, we thought it must have happened on the shooting of the show, but apparently this was not the first time Adaa and Alan were doing a show together. Their debut on television happened on Sony TV’s Palampur Express. Now isn’t this an ideal way to re-connect. Read excerpts from the short interview
Tell us about your characters on Pia Basanti Re
Adaa: I play Pia and my mother is a maid at Kabir’s house. She is working and earning to help me complete my education. I take great pride in my mother and I’m not ashamed to tell anyone that I am a maid’s daughter. I respect her. The serial showcases the emotional connect between a mother-daughter and between Pia and Kabir.
Alan: Kabir is a super rich guy, college heartthrob, football crazy and plays as a striker. He drives a sports car and is flashy. In spite of all this, he is a very genuine guy, down to earth, helpful and kind.
So is Pia Basanti Re a youth based show or will it eventually become a saas-bahu saga?
Alan: For now the story will revolve around these two characters. It will concentrate on the youth. The love story will eventually happen, which will lead to other things. There are a lot of other flavours in this show that you will discover eventually. It will also touch upon the class differences – rich vs. poor.
Shows which tell the love story between a rich boy and poor girl have been done to death. What is so unique about your show?
Alan: It has a lot of freshness. It is based in Bhopal. The show is about a self-respecting girl, who may be penniless but always stands up for herself. She changes people’s perception that status and class can only be achieved by money.
Adaa: It will also showcase the bond between a mother and daughter. Her confidence and pride in her parents and her upbringing.
You surprised everyone with your performance as a negative lead. Now you are playing an out and out positive character. How easy is it to switch between two shades like that?
Adaa: After my show Behenein, everyone said I could never pull off a negative role because I have an innocent face. Then Amrit Manthan happened and by the grace of God it turned out to be fabulous. Now I keep getting only negative roles and everyone kept saying that I should stick to negative roles as I won’t be able to do positive characters. Well I proved them wrong again when I bagged Pia Basanti Re. It’s a simple and very non glamourous role. It is different, and I am totally enjoying this. It’s very difficult to change over from Amrit to a simple girl.
Alan: She still crosses over sometimes.
Adaa: I still have a little hangover of Amrit. It comes and goes.
You have worked together in Palampur Express. How was it to comeback for this project?
Adaa: We met for the audition, mock shoots and are really happy that we are doing the show together. We did our first show together where we were complete freshers. It’s really great to be back on a show with Alan.
Alan: We became friends on the first show when we were doing an outdoor shoot in Mahableshwar.
Adaa: We had a great time in Bhopal now also while we were shooting for Pia Basanti Re.
