An investigation into the cause and circumstances of his death is currently underway by the Investigations and Coroner Divisions of the Sheriff’s Office, officials said. Police said that Williams was last seen alive at the property, where he lived with his wife Susan Schneider, at approximately 10:00 pm on Sunday.
Williams apparently committed suicide following a severe battle with depression. The Good Will Hunting star was just 63 years old. Ms Schneider led tributes to the actor last night, saying the world had lost one of its most beloved artists.Susan, who married the star in October 2011, said: “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings.
“I am utterly heartbroken.
“On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief.
“As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he game to millions.”Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.
His publicist confirmed the news saying: “Robin Williams passed away this morning.“He has been battling severe depression of late.“This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.” A forensic examination is currently scheduled today with subsequent toxicology testing to be conducted. Williams, born in Chicago, shot to fame playing alien Mork in the TV series Mork & Mindy,and went on to establish a successful career in both stand-up comedy and feature film acting. His film career includes such acclaimed films as Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Awakenings, The Fisher King and Good Will Hunting, as well as financial successes such as Popeye, Hook, Aladdin and Mrs. Doubtfire.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Williams had an addiction to cocaine; he has stated that he has since quit. He was hospitalised in March 2009 due to heart problems. He postponed his one-man tour in order to undergo surgery to replace his aortic valve. A spokesman for the Marin County Sheriff’s Department told the Mirror: “On August 11, 2014, at approximately 11.55am, Marin County Communications received a 911 telephone call reporting a male adult had been located unconscious and not breathing inside his residence in unincorporated Tiburon, California.
“The Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Tiburon Fire Department and Southern Marin Fire Protection District were dispatched to the incident with emergency personnel arriving on scene at 12pm. “The male subject, pronounced deceased at 12.02pm has been identified as Robin McLaurin Williams, a 63-year-old resident of unincorporated Tiburon, California. “An investigation into the cause, manner, and circumstances of the death is currently underway by the Investigations and Coroner Divisions of the Sheriff’s Office.
"Preliminary information developed during the investigation indicates Mr Williams was last seen alive at his residence, where he resides with his wife, at approximately 10pm on August 10, 2014.
"Mr Williams was located this morning shortly before the 911 call was placed to Marin County Communications.“At this time, the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.“A forensic examination is currently scheduled for August 12, 2014 with subsequent toxicology testing to be conducted.”Three-times married Williams left behind four finished films that are due to hit cinemas over the next year.He reprised his role as Teddy Roosevelt in night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and stars in the Christmas comedy Merry Friggn’ Christmas, due out in November.
