In an exclusive interview with BollywoodLife, Sophie speaks her heart out about her recent injury, plans after JDJ 7 and more…

Sophie Choudry is not only an amazing singer, but also a terrific dancer, which she has proved with her stellar acts in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7 despite a back injury. In a candid chat with us the gal expresses her feelings after receiving compliments from Kareena Kapoor, to whom she considers her toughest competition and shares her experience at JDJ7. Excerpts from conversation…

You have come really far in JDJ 7. How would you describe your journey in the show?

It is an extremely tough journey both physically and emotionally. I got the biggest shock when I came in the bottom two in the first week itself. After that I realised that I need to push harder. Also public is not used to seeing me on TV, so I needed to make sure that I connect with them.

Were you expecting to come this far in this competition?

Yes, I was. I won’t lie. In fact, I am expecting to get into the finals. My choreographer Deepak and I have worked really hard. We have given some amazing performances and we just hope that the audience gives us a chance to be in the finals.

You had an injury during the rehearsals. How did it all happen?

Actually first I had a back injury two weeks ago during the rehearsals. It happened because a lift went completely wrong. Post that I was not able to perform at all. On the day of the performance, my doctor came home at 6:30 in the morning and gave me pain killing injections and muscle relaxants so that I could perform. That performance was really special because I was dedicating it to my mom and Kareena was also supposed to be on the show that very day. And thankfully, it went extremely well. We got perfect scores.

Kareena was singing praises about you that day. How did that feel?

Yes, she said some amazing things, which I never expected her to say. For someone like Bebo to come on the show and tell everyone that ‘I only want Sophie to win Jhalak’ was really sweet. She knows me from a long time and those words from her really got me on.

But your injury got aggravated this week, we hear…

Yes, it did. I was still managing with that injury and we had decided to put up another amazing performance this week which was Acrobacia in water. And that in itself is such a huge challenge. We also had to use background dancers this week which was a part of judges’ challenge. So we used them as human water fountains. The entire performance went out flawless, but in the last 5 seconds of the act, one of the background dancers blanked out and that happened when I was supposed to lean on him. I fell flat on my spine. That was really painful. I was completely devastated, not only because of the injury, but also because in all my years of performing, it has never happened that a dancer has let an artist fall. I was completely shocked to see a dancer getting blacked out at such an easy step. But judges understood and said that I was flawless, it was the dancer’s mistake.

Were you planning to quit after the injury got aggravated?

I think some of the contestants would really love me to quit. They will be more than happy if I leave the show. But to be very honest, I am not stupid. If I felt that this injury would create problems for me in the future, I will obviously quit. Health is very important for me. As of now, my physiotherapist and doctor have told me that I can go ahead, but I will have to be very careful. I am not ready to quit, so for all of those ready to celebrate about the fact that I’ll leave the show, I have got a bad news for them.

Who do you think is your toughest competition amongst the remaining contestants?

I think everyone is a tough competition. Shakti (Mohan) is a trained dancer, so I really didn’t compete with her and made my own path. Ashish (Sharma) performs really well. Even if his performance is average, audience has always saved him because he is very popular. I think Mouni (Roy) is a tough competitor, more so because she has Punit (Pathak) as her choreographer. Punit is a really strong and popular choreographer. I think even the kids (Akshat Singh and Vaishnavi) are doing amazing. But having said that, I think even Deepak is the most loved choreographer on the show. Judges have always complimented his choreography and concepts. I guess people are loving us as a jodi and we hope to make it to the finals.

Post JDJ 7, do you have any other plans to take up another reality show?

Definitely not! Jhalak was offered to me four times in the past, but I refused it. This year, however, I don’t know what happened to me and decided to be a part of it. I decided to take this up as a challenge more than anything else.

What if you are offered to be a part of Bigg Boss 8?

I will not participate in Bigg Boss. I have been offered this show many times before, but I have always refused it. And I will continue to say no. Through Jhalak, people have realised that what kind of a person I am. I am not a glam doll, in fact I am more of a family oriented person. I am not somebody, who would like to be in a show like Bigg Boss. I like shows which show your talent, and not the ones which are all about controversies. It’s just not me. I think in my entire career, I have never been in any controversies. And I would like to keep it like that
