He migrated to Lahore from Jullundhar, East Punjab in 1947. After completing his early education at Lahore, he joined Pakistan Navy in 1961 where he was commissioned in the Executive Branch in 1964. Thereafter he served in the Pakistan Navy in various capacities till his retirement in 1997. On retirement, he was appointed as Ambassador of Pakistan to Tunisia and was also accredited to PLO (Mr.Yasser Arafat). After the coup of General Pervez Musharraf, Admiral Jawaid returned to his hometown Lahore, Pakistan. During his service in the Pakistan Navy Admiral Jawaid Iqbal served on board a number of seagoing and shore-based operational naval units including ships, submarine and Special Services Unit. He is a qualified Scuba Diver, a frogman and a Paratrooper. He is also a specialist in Torpedo and Anti- Submarine Warfare, Explosive Ordinance Disposal, Special Service Operations and Underwater Warfare. During his career Admiral Jawaid Iqbal held a number of senior and important operational appointments, which include Commander Pakistan Fleet, Commander Karachi, Chief of Naval Staff (Personnel), Commander SSG (Navy), Director General Naval Intelligence and Director General (Training) at Joint Staff Headquarters. He was the senior Naval Advisor to the Government of Qatar from 1983 to 1986. He is a veteran of 1965 and 1971 Indo Pak Wars and a recipient of Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military) and Sitara-e-Basalat (Military). He is a graduate of U.S Naval War College as well as of National Defence College, Pakistan where he also served on the faculty as Directing Staff (Navy). After his return to his hometown Lahore, Admiral Jawaid joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in April 2004. Since his joining the party he has served as Chief Election Commissioner (PTI), General Secretary Punjab, President Punjab, Central Information Secretary, Additional Secretary General and Central Vice President. Besides holding the above appointments, Vice Admiral Jawaid has been a very active worker of the Party and participated fully in the Party’s struggle for restoration of Democracy and the Chief Justice. During this period he was detained twice in Police Stations, once alongwith Imran Khan in P.S Old Anarkali, Lahore and second time in P.S Waris Khan, Rawalpindi while protesting against visit of Mr.Bush to Pakistan. When Imran Khan was detained in Dera Ghazi Khan Jail, he in his capacity as Central Information Secretary was quick to write letters to Senator Hillary Clinton, Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi and Sarah Jackson Lee informing them of his detention and criticizing their policy towards Pakistan. He was the one who recommended that US instead of maintaining relations with Dictators should instead develop relations at people to people level, which was soon after reflected in President Obama’s new strategy towards Pakistan. During earthquake of 2005, he as Chief Co-ordinator Imran Khan Earthquake Relief Fund (Punjab) co-ordinated relief efforts of PTI by sending relief goods to affected areas. Admiral Jawaid Iqbal is a staunch believer of Democratic culture based on Truth, Equality and Justice. He has always opposed military takeovers and is well known for his vocal and bold stance on this issue. He was not only against the Martial Law of General Zia-Ul-Haq but vehemently opposed the takeover by General Musharraf on Oct 1999.
