Habib Faisal is back with another love story after Ishaqzaade. However, it is no longer a tale of honour killings and rather this time it is a con-(wo)man story draped in the backdrop of a food fiesta. Expectations were high because of the immense hype regarding the movie. Also the movie’s music did exceedingly well, which made it a must watch. So let us go through the full movie review and see as to whether the movie impressed us or not…
What is it about:
Gulrez (Parineeti Chopra), daughter of a court clerk (Anupam Kher), is fed up of grooms coming to check her out and asking for humongous amounts of dowry. No one bothers to check how qualified and brainy she is, as all they are concerned about the dowry. Finally after many rejections, she decides to screw getting married and devices a con plan to get rich and thereby fulfill her dreams. She finds out a flaw in the Indian legal system and decides to use it to con a prospective groom, Tariq (Aditya Roy Kapur) and then enjoy on the alimony settlement amount. Will she be able to con Aditya? Or will she fall head over heels for Aditya’s simplicity and delicious food recipes?
What’s hot:
Surprisingly, the best part about the movie is the acting. Parineeti Chopra is excellent in her portrayal of Gulrez, Aditya Roy Kapur doesn’t have that much story-space, but still manages to grab attention. Anupam Kher, however, stole the show with his brilliant acting in the film. Anupam’s portrayal of the father, who hasn’t taken a single penny of bribe till date but has to pay for her daughter’s dowry, is fantastic. The film also marks the debut of TV heart throb Karan Wahi. He has the least amount of screen space but even in that he has defined the fact that he is here to stay. His chocolate boy looks will make sure of that.
The music by Sajid-Wajid is fantastic. Songs like Daawat-e-Ishq, Rangreli, Mannat, Shayarana, etc stay on with for long after you leave the theatres.
The cinematography is not too great in terms of visuals, but it has captured the cities of Lucknow and Hyderabad in great beauty. However, most of the scenes are indoors and thus it is only during the songs that you actually get to see the beautiful city and enjoy the cinematography to the T.
What’s not:
The plot slackens and is very predictable. The story begins with a good intent and promises to take you somewhere. The sad part is that it takes you exactly where you had thought of by seeing the trailer and there is no bit of surprise in it. The way Habib Faisal had treated Ishaqzaade, twisting and playing with the climax, is missing here. It seems as if there was a hurry to finish the film and thus the climax looks rushed.
The film was promoted as a food fest, but the amount of food shown in the film is minimal. It is just that Aditya’s Tariq is a chef at a very famous restaurant. Apart from that there are hardly a lot of scenes where people are seen talking about food. Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi’s Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurrana had more people talking about food than in this film.
Verdict:
The otherwise predictable story is saved by the brilliant performance of the cast. it isn’t a great film but is good enough for a one-time watch.
