While the A-list actors refuse to take up women-centric scripts, the new comers present a win-win situation to the filmmakers
While even the biggest of Bollywood actresses don’t mind playing second fiddle to the hero (Katrina Kaif in Dhoom 3, Kareena Kapoor Khan in Singham 2 to name a few), the scenario changes completely when the script focuses on the actress. With none of the A-list actors wanting to come on board for these movies, directors are left with no other choice but to sign either rank newcomers or actors who are yet to make it big in Bollywood. And looks like casting newer actors opposite these established heroines is a win-win proposition for the makers and the actresses as well as those beginning their B-Town innings. Here’s who are rubbing shoulders with B-town’s biggest actresses these days…
Fawad Khan
Will be seen in: Khoobsurat opposite Sonam Kapoor
Story so far: Fawad was noticed outside Pakistan when he starred as a musician-turned-fanatic in Khuda Ke Liye. His TV show Zindagi Gulzar Hai won him more fans as it was also telecast in India. Surprisingly, the actor has chosen a heroine-oriented movie to make his Bollywood debut. The movie Khoobsurat, which is the remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film of the same name, has Sonam in Rekha’s role, while Fawad will reprise the role played by Rakesh Roshan. Anyone who has seen the original knows that the male lead has very little to do in the movie. But the makers of the new Khoobsurat have changed the script and have cast Fawad in the role of a royal. Let’s see if this Disney movie works its magic for the actor.
Next up: The actor is yet to sign his next Bollywood movie.
Vir Das
Seen in: Revolver Rani opposite Kangana Ranaut
Story so far: Vir Das, who is a stand-up comic, made his B-Town debut with Delhi Belly after making a few small appearances in some movies. He played Kangana’s boy toy in RR. Before the movie, he acted in movie including Go Goa Gone and Shaadi Ke Side Effects. Though Go Goa Gone was a success it didn’t put him in the solo hero brackets. That along with his great comic timing made him an ideal choice for the role of a gold-digger wannabe actor in RR. His last release Amit Sahini Ki List went unnoticed.
Next up: His next releases include comic capers Santa Banta and Mastizaade.
Rajkummar Rao
Seen in: Queen opposite Kangana Ranaut
Story so far: Rajkummar, who made his debut in 2011, wasn’t a newbie with movies like Shaitan, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2, Talaash, and Kai Po Che to his credit. He even won the National Award for Shahid. The actor who is known to choose his roles for the content rather than the length, did a great job as Rani’s (Kangana) evil fiance. His performance was appreciated by the critics and audience alike. Post Queen the actor has been seen in Citylights, which was loved by the critics, but did not create much buzz at the box-office.
Next up: The actor will be seen opposite Sonam Kapoor in Dolly Ki Doli and will also be a part of Mohit Suri’s Hamari Adhuri Kahani that has Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan in the lead.
Ali Fazal
Seen in: Bobby Jasoos opposite Vidya Balan
Story so far: Ali began his career with ads, he was spotted by director Rajkumar Hirani, who cast him in a small role in 3 Idiots (remember Joy who commits suicide?). He then acted in Always Kabhi Kabhi (2011), which was produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. However, the film failed at the box-office. Two years later, in 2013, Ali tasted success with Excel Entertainment’s Fukrey. His pairing with Vidya raised some eyebrows as many thought that he looked much younger than her. But with a heroine playing the title role, it was only natural that no A-list actor would play second fiddle. The movie got lukewarm reactions at the BO. Ali hasn’t made a huge splash in Bollywood, but the actor has found himself a spot in the next installation of the Fast And Furious franchise.
Next up: Ali will be seen in the erotic thriller Ek Tho Chance, which premiered at the 2009 Film Festival of Kerala and is scheduled for theatrically release in 2014. He will also be seen in Sonali Cable and of course the next installation of The Fast…
Neil Bhoopalam
Will be seen in: NH10 opposite Anushka Sharma
Story till now: Neil has been a part of movies like No One Killed Jessica, Shaitaan and David, and also telly’s most ambitious mini-series Anil Kapoor’s 24. However, none of those have brought Neil a lot of fame. He will now be seen opposite Anushka in a movie that marks the actress’ debut as a producer. Obviously, it will have her in the spotlight, but it remains to be seen whether Neil gets to shine in this movie as well.
Next up: Rensil D’silva’s Ungli starring Emraan Hashmi, Sanjay Dutt, Randeep Hooda and Kangana Ranaut.
Jisshu Sengupta
Will be seen: In Piku starring Deepika Padukone
Story till now: Jisshu is a known name in Bengali movies, the actor doesn’t need any introduction there, but people who don’t watch Bengali movies aren’t really aware of the actor. Jishhu was seen playing Ileana D’Cruz’s husband in Barfi, but hasn’t really followed it up with any more films in Bollywood. He was supposed to have a bigger role in Mardaani, but since the role was chopped a lot, he was credited with a ‘guest appearance’. With Deepika, Amitabh Bahchchan and Irrfan Khan in the movie, Piku definitely is his big break in Bollywood.
Next up: The actor is yet to sign any Bollywood film apart from Piku.
Tahir Raj Bhasin
Seen in: A negative role in Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani
Story so far: His mean act in Mardaani got him a lot of praise. Apart from appreciation from the critics, he even had Aamir Khan praising his performance on Twitter. Now if that isn’t want every newbie wants, what is? The actor was kept under wraps during the promotion of the film that focused only on Rani. But now that the movie is out, Tahir is doing his share of interviews too. The actor has also been signed by Yash Raj Film’s talent management division. Looks like making his debut with a heroine-oriented movie worked for this newbie.
Next up: Yet to sign his next movie.
Imran Abbas Naqvi
Seen in: Creature 3D opposite Bipasha Basu
Story so far: Imran became popular through Pakistani TV shows and films. The actor was considered for Aditya Roy Kapur’s role in Guzaarish as well as Aashiqui 2, later he was supposed to make his debut with Akshay Kumar’s movie Boss. The role was later played by Shiv Pandit. The actor lost out these plum projects as he had signed a three-film deal with Rajkumar Santoshi. After he opted out of the deal, he signed Creature 3D that has been directed by Vikram Bhatt.
Next up: The actor has already signed Muzaffar Ali’s movie Jaanisaar with Pernia Qureshi.
Darshan Kumar
Seen in: Mary Kom opposite Priyanka Chopra
Story so far: PC’s on-screen hubby, who essayed the character of Onler Karong Kom, had to lose 12 kgs to get under the skin of charcter. As fas as acting is concerned, he has trained under Naseeruddin Shah. The actor had to go through various look tests, some of which were with PC, to see whether they looked good together. The movie, of course, is Priyanka’s party all the way, but Darshan is hoping that he will reach out to a larger audience with it.
Next up: After playing supportive hubby to PC, Darshan will be seen in a negative role in NH 10 that stars Anushka Sharma.
