The music of Farah Khan‘s upcoming Happy New Year was released with great fanfare recently with Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Abhishek Bachchan and Vivaan Shah gracing the event. All that promotional buzz increases our expectations from the film’s music. So let us have a look at the song by song music review of the album and see whether the songs impress us or not.
Indiawaale: Sung by Neeti Mohan, Vishal Dadlani, K.K. and Shankar Mahadevan, this song has the potential to become one of the biggest dance hits of the year. The song’s beats are perfect to forget everything else and just dance to the tune. Though the song is nothing too different from any Vishal Shekhar number the catchy tune and simple lyrics, given by Irshaad Kamil make you hum.
There is another remix track of the same song which is high on electronic beats but we like the original better. If you are a fan of techno beats, you’d probably like this one.
Manwa laage: Sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh this song is a soft romantic number. The song transport you into a different zone altogether. The sweet tune and Shreya and Arijit’s soothing vocals to Irshad Kamil’s lyrics makes it a must-hear song. Of course, the cinematography will keep your eyes fixed to Deepika and Shah Rukh’s chemistry, the song is adorable even if you are just listening.
Satakli: Sung by Sukhwinder Singh, this song seems to be a celebration song. The song starts with foot-tapping, shoulder moving dhol beats. The beauty of the composition is its simplicity. The perky lyrics and Sukhwinder’s energetic delivery compliment the tune perfectly.
Lovely: Sung by Kanika Kapoor, Ravindra Upadhyay, Miraya Varma and Fateh, the song has been composed nicely by Dr Zeus and Vishal-Shekhar. The rap and the punjabi dhol beats have been used timely and to great effect. The song begins with a certain Arabic tune and that creates a bit of mystery for the listeners. The lyrics by Jiwan Mann and Kumaar will stay on your mind for long.
There is another version of the song called Kamlee, which is solely composed by Dr Zeus. The song has typical Punjabi beats. While we completely adored Lovely, Kamlee is even better. Though the lyrics are mostly the same, with only ‘Lovely’ replacing ‘Kamlee’, the beats take a different turn altogether.
World dance medley: Sung by Neeti Mohan, Vishal Dadlani, Sukhwinder Singh, K.K. and Shankar Mahadevan, this is a medley which uses all the songs that are there in the album. The songs have been smartly alternated between the soft numbers and the fast ones. The build up after Shah Rukh’s speech in the song is sure to give you goose bumps. The different take on Indiawaale towards the climax grows on you.
Nonsense ki night: Sung by Mika Singh is true to its name. The song has brought together all Hindi idioms and literally translated them to English, which makes the lyrics really nonsensical. Mika Singh does what he does best and it is his uncanny rendition that is sure to bring a huge smile to your face. It’s the kind of song that’s cheesy but you can’t resist.
Dance like a chammiya: Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Vishal Dadlani, this song is another dance hip number. This song has some good rap beats by Vishal but it is Sunidhi’s fantastically energetic voice that makes this song stand out from the others. Lyrics maybe mindless at times but the rhythm of the song keeps you wanting more.
Sharabi: Sung by Manj Musik, Nindy Kaur, Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani, this song is a typical high pitched Punjabi party track. The track is full of techno beats and if you are a fan of Punjabi songs then you will definitely love it. The lyrics by Kumaar, Vishal and Shekhar are apt and suit the song perfectly, but above all it is Manj Musik’s voice which makes this song a must keep in your music players.
The heist: Sung and composed by John Stewart Eduri, this is a purely instrumental track. This seems to be the background score of the movie, especially during the robbery scenes. The idea of the background score being part of the audio, wethinks, is in itself brilliant. The music is very gripping and takes you through a journey of emotions- suspense, curiosity, anxiety.
Verdict: Vishal Shekhar‘s, as always, have done a great job in making the songs perky and fun. The videos with the dance steps make it more so. Dr. Zeus has done a fantastic job even with the minimal amount of track-space that he has got.
