Profile Justice (Rtd) Iftikhar Ahmad Cheema (born 1939) is a Pakistani Barrister cum politician. Cheema became a judge in lower judiciary, than elivated to the Punjab High Court and retired in 2001. In 2008, he was elected as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistanfrom NA 101, Gujranwala VII. Early life and education Iftikhar Ahmad Cheema was born in 1939 in a small village Katore cheema near Wazirabad, Punjab. He did his matriculation from Faisalabad and then graduated from Govt. College Lahore. Following the footsteps of his uncle and father-in-law, Justice (Rtd) Mohammad Afzal Cheema, he joined the Punjab University Law College for his Law (LLB) degree. Higher education and student politics He received his Law degree with a silver medal and proceeded to do (Bar at Law) from (Lincoln's Inn), UK in 1971. He completed his Bar at Law in 1974 and was offered a Job in one of the leading Law Practices in London. He refused and got involved in the Overseas Pakistani Students Politics and later became the President of the Pakistan Student Federation (a central organisation of 4000 Pakistani students studying in various institutions of the UK at the time) by defeating Nawabzada Ghazunfar Gull of Gujrat. Judicial career He returned to Pakistan in 1975 to join the Judiciary and served in various districts of Punjab as District and Sessions Judge including important districts like Okara, Sahiwal, Chakwal, Sargodha, sheikhupura. He was elevated as the Judge of the Lahore High Court in Punjab in 1998 and retired in 2001. He was then made the Chairman of the Labour Appellate Tribunal where he served for two years. Political career On the persuasion of the people of the constituency and encouragement from his mentor and Father in Law' Justice (Rtd) Iftikhar Cheema contested the 2008 general elections as the Pakistan Muslim League (N) candidate and defeated a stalwart of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) Mr Hamid Nasir Chattha with a margin of 23000 votes and became a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. He has been elected as member of the most important Standing Committee "Law Justice and Human Rights" which is considering the most controversial ordinance of the Pakistani History " NRO". The proposed bill which the committee is considering will provide immunity to President Asif Ali Zardari on his corruption cases. Justice Cheema is the elder brother of Zulfiqar A Cheema, one of the dead honest and efficient senior police officers in Pakistan, who for the first time in the history of country, with the help of Interpol got hold of the famous assassin of Punjab, Faiz Rasool alias Nanhu Ghoraya, while serving as Regional Police Officer Gujranwala Division.
