Excerpts from conversation…
You first made your debut through television, and now you are acting in movies. Tell us about this journey from Tellyland to Bollywood…
It has been an interesting journey for me. I was in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and then TV serials happened. Films were a natural transition. Acting excites me, and I love my life as an actor you get to play diverse characters, and live their lives. In that sense, you get to be so many people in your lifetime. That is not possible in any other profession. Music excites me most. I have grown up in a musical family It is a part of my life, a daily routine.
Your film, Desi Kattey is going to hit the theaters tomorrow. Tell us about your role in the film and what made you take up the role.
In Desi Kattey, I play the character of an illiterate village girl who is victimised by the villain. It came across as a very powerful role. It was also exciting because it was not regular role where you dress up well and play heroine. From molestation to being treated meanly, I grow up to be a woman who holds pain in her heart and then finds true love one day, only to see her happiness short lived as death claims me.Talking would be revealing but it was one scene I loved playing. I choose my roles based on the strength of character.
What kind of movies would you like to be a part of?
I want to do movies where I am not just used as a prop. There is something there for the actor in me to get excited and say, this is it!
What else do you love apart from singing and acting?
I like to cook. I play the piano I love reading and holidays and love exploring new places. I have been to Kenya, Jakarta, Copenhagen, Scotland, Sweden and recently went for snorkeling in Bali even though I don’t know swimming. I simply love to travel.
Lastly, you must be aware of this controversy about Deepika Padukone and Times Of India. What is your opinion on this issue?
Every woman has the right to live the way she chooses, wear the clothes she likes. No one has the right to bring her private parts to public scrutiny.
