The third installment of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shakespeare trilogy managed to floor the audience present at the film festival
After impressing one and all at the desi box office with it’s high voltage drama, the impact of Shahid Kapoor’s Haider seems to have crossed boundaries and travelled across the sea, as the film has garnered some rave response at 9th Rome Film Festival. Not only was Haider screened at RFF, but it also managed to bag an award at the event.
Yes! Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shakespearean adaptation of Hamlet has won the People’s Choice Award at Rome Film Festival. Out of the 7 films that featured under this genre, Haider was the only Asian film selected across the globe. This is the first time that an Indian film wins the Audience Award in a non-specialized (non-focused on Asian Cinema) wide-ranging International festival. Haider even managed to beat Ben Affleck’s Gone Girl, which was also nominated for the People’s Choice Award.
After winning the prestigious award, the director said to a leading daily,”About 90% of those who watched the film were Italians. They said the film had really touched them. Some of them had visited Kashmir in the early 1990s, others before the onset of militancy.”
“The award proves that if you put your heart in a movie, it can move people beyond borders,” he added. Shraddha Kapoor, who played her part beautifully in Haider, was ecstatic to hear the news. The Ek Villain star tweeted,”We WON! #Haider - the 1st Indian film to win the main category of people’s choice award at Rome film festival! So humbled, grateful & proud!”
It’s been a great start for Haider in the award’s season and we hope Shahid starrer would win many more accolades, making Indian cinema proud in front of the world.
