The actor talks about his off-screen role of a language trainer to the cast of Haider
TV actor Sumit Kaul who was seen in Lagi Tujh Se Lagan and Do Dil… Ek Jaan, played one of the Salman’s in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider. But that was not his only act. The actor also played a language coach to Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Tabu.
“Being a Kashmiri Pandit, I know the Kashmiri dialect very well. Hence Vishal ji asked me to help around with accent training as well. Although my acting stint did not require more than 15 days, I stayed on for the entire two and a half month schedule in Kashmir where the film was shot. We Kashmiris or any native lingo speakers have a distinct way in which we pronounce words in our language which also gets translated when we speak in English and Hindi as well e.g. Shraddha says I loved you instead of I love you. I sat with both Shahid and Shraddha tutored them in how to speak Hindi with Kashmiri touch. I also helped Tabu get the right enunciations when she sang the folk song Roshe valle. These nuances give distinct feel to the characters and make them endearing. My work actually started right from the script reading session itself where I would help the actors get the feel of the accent. Also a lot of my inputs were properly developed and used in the film.”
Talking about his Salman loving character Sumit says, “It was there more for comic relief. But being part of the dark narrative, my character, although close to Haider, not only sold him to the cops but was also ready to kill him as that would feather his nest with the local police bosses .”
