Rohit Shetty’s much-hyped project, Welcome to Karachi, may either prove to be a saving grace for the troubled metropolis, changing perceptions worldwide, or just end up being unnecessary propaganda but whatever its agenda might be, it finally has something that makes it more relatable to us. According to reports, the female lead of the film is a Pakistani actress raised in UK called Kubra Khan a.k.a Rabia Khan.
Kubra Khan was none other than the ‘bank manager who saves the day’ and Moon’s dream girl from Na Maloom Afraad. Kubra Khan! “My official name is in fact Rabia but I am known to friends as Kubra and I am actually working for Welcome to Karachi,” Kubra confirmed .
When asked if she was going to be doing something meatier instead of just being another filler in a Bollywood film, she said. “I am playing the main lead in the film; a strict, firm woman who works for the government.” “I have no idea how the makers got hold of me but it just happened. I didn’t have to go through a casting process either and it’s just been a great opportunity,” she added.
Previously, the filmmaker Vashu Bhagnani had plans of casting the Kick helmer Nargis Fakhri, however, things couldn’t work out with her for some reason. It was then that Bhagnani started auditions for the female lead of the movie in London and came across Pakistani Kubra Khan who isn’t only beautiful but according to the filmmaker also had command over Hindi, Urdu and English.
Here is to all those actors who feel it’s better to work as main lead in a Pakistani film than work in a small role in Bollywood – Kubra Khan has done it and we really hope she breaks through the typical, sultry sidekick image of Pakistani actresses in Bollywood. (courtesy Instep)
