Other quintessentially American festivals have found acceptance in recent years. We ask around if Mumbai has warmed to Thanksgiving, too…
Three things come to mind when you hear the word Thanksgiving — giving thanks to God, sitting at a table filled with plenty of food, with family and friends for company and roast turkey. And the festival is actually a big deal in the USA.
What about Mumbai, though? We do celebrate Halloween (the sheer amount of Halloween themed parties being organised in the city says it all). And we bet you were at least a little surprised if your building kids came around trick-or-treating on your doorstep.
And Thanksgiving? Well, if you’ve watched enough holiday movies on cable and are the enterprising sort, you’ll head to a Thanksgiving cooking workshop being held in the city and learn some tricks. Or maybe, grab treats from confectionery shops?
But do we celebrate Thanksgiving here? We asked some Bollywood celebrities. Here’s what they had to say…
Lisa Haydon, Actress
I don’t have any set Thanksgiving celebrations, but this year my girlfriend Gabriella and Diva, and I are going to Ellipsis for Thanksgiving dinner. Our friend is a chef there and is putting up dinner for a few friends. But I always remember to give thanks.
Wendell Rodricks, Fashion designer
I am not an American. So there is no need to celebrate Thanksgiving. Besides, I don’t eat poultry or meat. I did not celebrate Thanksgiving even when I lived in the USA.
Maria Goretti, Homemaker
No, I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s an American thing.
Loy Mendonca, Music director
I give thanks to my Creator everyday, at any time of the day!
Clinton Cerejo, Music producer
Our family doesn’t celebrate it, but last year, we were in the US for Thanksgiving and celebrated it with friends. It was long, lazy and elaborate meal that included turkey with stuffing, and pumpkin pie among other goodies.
