Recently I happened to buy a processed cheddar cheese slices pkt from a shop in Rawalpindi, not paying much attention since I was not in a european country but in Pakistan which is an islamic.
Before I could open the pkt I happened to check the reverse side of the packet and saw that it was made in France, I went through all the ingredients and nowhere was it mentioned that it was suitable for vegetarians, ie the rennet component used for coagulating cheese and firming up the proteins in the milk were not from animal source.
The Cheddar cheese slices sold in most shops are imported and none with halal labels. People are buying these cheeses and using them. Our bakeries selling pizzaz and other foods made of cheese made with these cheeses probably. Why are products with no halal label sold in pakistan which is an islamic state People readily believe that if its sold in pakistan its going to be halal. Please always look for the halal label and inquire bakeries which cheese they used for making their pizzas and sandwiches. Whether or not the cheese was made with halal or vegetarian rennet.
Non Muslims can also be vegetarians so there should be a suitable for vegetarians label too which would help Muslims too like the Muslims living in Europe check for the V sign not halal sign.
PS: Rennet /ˈrɛnɨt/ is a complex of enzymes produced in the stomachs of ruminant mammals which is used in the production of most cheeses.
