World Diabetes Day: Zeba Bhukhtiar, Waseem Akram, Umer Shareef and Fawad Khan fought and won over the disease!

Lollywood actors are not behind in this race. There have been many actors who have had diabetes since an early age but never let their dreams fall back because of their aliment. On World Diabetes Day we salutes some of these actors...

Fawad Khan:
The wonder boy who has won over Bollywood after the super successful Khoobsurat, is a diabetic since a very early age. While speaking to a leading daily Fawad informs, “I was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus Type 1. I was told that it occurs due to an auto-immune disorder.” So what does the Zindagi Gulzar Hai actor do to keep the disease at bay? He informs, “Insulin and strict monitoring. However, control can seem to pose a problem on a long term basis. The usage of a metforming-based tablet, as prescribed by the physician can help combat insulin insensitivity.” The actor has been battling and winning the disease since he was 17.

Wasim Akram:
Being one of the finest fast bowlers ever seen in the world of cricket. He is a former Pakistani Captain and also had a very successful career in England, playing for Lancashire.
He diagnosed diabetes in 1997 in the middle of a Test cricket series. Akram had begun losing weight and experiencing considerable thirst and fatigue. He lost loads of weight, was drinking a lot of water and was sleeping the whole time.
He played the whole series against the West Indies in the same condition, and just put the changes down to the fact that he was training. It was not until his dad dragged him (at the age of 31!) to the doctor that his blood glucose levels were found to be very high.
He was told that he had Type 1 diabetes, he brought his diabetes under control by carefully controlling his diet and exercise levels. He continued to play world class cricket, and went on to become a legend in his own lifetime, being.

Umer Sharif:
He has diabetes and has undergone a bypass but that hasn't deterred him from working to the hilt. I want my name to be in the Guinness Book of World Records, Umar Sharif reveals of his future plans. He already has international success in stage, film, television and stand-up comedy to his credit, the book of world records is really all that's left for him to achieve. And knowing his workaholic ways, his comic genius and his sheer energy, Umar Sharif just might make it happen!

Zeba Bukhtiar:
Popular television star, Zeba Bakhtiar, was diagnosed with diabetes in her early ’20s. Zeba Bakhtiar is a great believer in alternative therapy. She believes her sugar level is kept under control by yoga and Reiki. In spite of being diabetic for over 12 years, Bakhtiar’s eyesight has not shown any signs of detoriation – a common occurance among diabetics. “I attribute this to regular yoga, especially inverted exercises like head and shoulder stands, which increase blood flow to the cranial region,” she says. Zeba also believes that drinking four to six glasses of water before breakfast and before meals helps keep her sugar level in check.
