Raju Hirani and Aamir Khan deliver what is easily the cinematic experience of this year
We watched PK and instantly fell in love with its simple yet meaningful story. All our preconceived notions and perceptions about this film were laid to rest once the reels started rolling and Aamir Khan aka the alien from outer space made an entry into our lives. Here at top 10 reasons why PK deserves our ‘film of the year’ tag! (Initially we had Queen as our favourite, but sorry Kangana, Aamir stole your tiara!)
Aamir Khan
The man has single-handedly made PK an experience and not just a movie. Right from his body language, to his popping eyes, the way he walks, the twinkle in his eyes, Aamir becomes PK. There are moments when you forget you are watching Aamir, and instead become friends with PK. I can’t think of any other actor who would have played PK with such ease without making him a caricature or a joke.
Raju Hirani
Easily one of the most sought after directors in the country, Rajkumar Hirani is a man of few words. Saying he’s a recluse would be an understatement, extremely camera shy and someone who loves being behind the camera, Raju Hirani puts together a world that we become a part of till the end credits start rolling. A master story teller, he makes sure he doesn’t get into the dangerous territory of becoming preachy and self obsessed. Despite being loaded with heavy social messages like religious belief and superstition, he finds way of lacing these subtexts with humor and fun.
Anushka Sharma
Like her director, Anushka Sharma too prefers to greet the media when she has a release. A versatile actor who’s already proved her mettle in the past in a variety of roles, Anushka Sharma is at home in her role as the curious and transparent Jagat Janini. Her timing with Aamir is perfect and the climax that calls for restraint shows what a natural performer Anushka is.
Alien plot
It was a stroke of genius to include an angle of paranormal activity in a plot that is so human. An alien from outer space landing on earth only to be confused by the complex behavorial patterns we exhibit. The opening scene where the spaceship lands and Aamir makes his entry is spectacular.
Sanjay Dutt and Sushant Singh Rajput’s cameos
Both have cameos, but extremely important roles to play. Full marks to Sanjay Dutt and Sushant Singh Rajput for agreeing on being a part of PK despite knowing that the film belongs to Aamir Khan. Sanju’s character is immensely likeable and we could see why Hirani is able to bring out the best in him. Sushan’t chemistry with Anushka will make film makers sit up and wonder why the two haven’t been cast together till now!
Papa don’t preach!
As we mentioned earlier, PK touches upon several issues and topics that are sensitive. It dabbles with religion which is a taboo and a murky territory for commercial film makers to venture into. But Hirani handles the subject with utmost sensitivity. There is a scene where Aamir is carrying two bottles of wine into a mosque. This scene if not handled and written well could have gone in the wrong way. But given Hirani and Aamir’s sensibilities, the religious angel never seems preachy or too heavy.
Using Bhojpuri
Not Marathi, not Tamil or Punjabi, but Aamir chose to use Bhojpuri as his language of conversation as PK. It was a smart move given that the dialect is so colorful and certain words and phrases can twisted and turned to make it sound funny (waste becomes bhaste!). Aamir has taken extra effort to make sure he doesn’t use the language in a distasteful way.
Tear jerker climax!
What a superbly written and executed climax. Aamir’s monologue and Anushka’s reaction will have you reaching our for the tissues. This scene is bound to tug you emotional chords. Neither Aamir or Hirani go over the top and use loud background music or jarring visuals in the climax. In fact the emotional of unconditional love is brought out beautifully in this scene.
Ranbir Kapoor’s alien act
The film ends with a bang with Ranbir Kapoor making an awesome cameo as an alien with Aamir. There will be applause and whistles as RK makes his way out of the spaceship. We sensed this was coming given the numerous appearances that RK and Aamir made over the last few motnhs. But full marks to team PK for keeping this a secret and leaking it out on release day.
No Aamir in 2015!
Aamir Khan fans will have to see PK multiple times to watch their favourite actor on the big screen. The actor has no release in 2015, making PK his only film film to watch the entire next year. We think that’s a smart move and given the fact that PK is high on recall value, it won’t come as a surprise if it emerges as the bonafide biggest hit of 2014!
