Here’s what went into the making of Raj and Simran’s iconic love story…
When Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was in the making, no one guessed that it would turn out to be one of Indian cinema’s most iconic love stories. We got our hands on these really interesting making videos of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and the other cast and crew having fun on the sets of DDLJ… The Chemistry
SRK and Kajol seemed very comfortable with each other and had great chemistry going right from the beginning. Apparently the two did not even have to rehearse their dialogues. They were just like two naughty kids on the sets who went in for the kill and gave a perfect shot. Stating the obvious, the two became the hottest onscreen pair ever.
Shah Rukh’s first romantic lead role
Shah Rukh who started his career with the negative lead in Baazigar, had only done edgy and grey characters before DDLJ. Ironically, the king of romance never really wanted to do romantic films. Obviously, after the success of DDLJ he had a change of heart and now believes that the YRF film was his launch pad.
The not so funny scene
Remember the film’s epic romantic scene where the two share a room in a hotel and Raj pulls a prank on Simran by telling her that the two shared intimate moments together. Well, it so happened, that each time Shah Rukh would open his jacket’s zipper, the two would burst into laughter much to everyone else’s annoyance. It took them 17 takes just to get that one simple shot right.
The Title
The title of the film has a different story altogether. While the trend of borrowing film titles from old song is common today, DDLJ was probably one of the first to have done it. And as it happens, with all new things, people were sceptical of the idea. While Kajol termed it ‘tapori’ there were others who thought it was cute. And one among them was Mr Anupam Kher, probably because it was his wife Kirron Kher who suggested the name Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
The Real Raj
While Raj is very much synonymous with SRK today, the character was actually inspired by Aditya Chopra. “Raj’s character is purely inspired from Adi’s real life, I could see myself living his character,” says King Khan. He added “Though I look nice in the film, but I use to imitate Adi in my own style.” The director actually enacted each scene to give SRK an idea of what was expected of him.
