He might be short in stature, but Aamir can give several lessons to his friends, read to find out..
Aamir Khan’s PK is out. We saw the film and absolutely loved it. There is no doubt in our mind that Aamir Khan is a thinkers actor. Perhaps all those long pauses he takes in between conversations are breaks for putting thought into his next projects. If that’s the case then we would like him to take as many pauses as possible! On a more serious note, PK not only proves why Aamir is one of the finest actors in the country, but also throws light on how he pushes the envelope and changes the game each time. Be it the physical transformation of Ghajini, the college going boy act in 3 Idiots or now the cute alien from outter space Aamir slinks into any role like a well fitted glove.
2014 was a remarkable year for the Khans. Not just for Aamir, but the other two biggies- Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. On a personal and professional front many new barriers were broken and records made. SRK and Salman both had a successful year at the box-office with both Happy New Year and Kick setting the cash registers jingling. 2014 was also the year where hatchets were buried and past friendships renewed. This was the first time in decades that we saw all 3 Khans – Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh on the same stage mingling with each other and reliving their past.
After watching PK, we think Aamir who’s a great talker and a thinker should sit SRK and Salman down and give them these 5 lessons for their forthcoming films. Or perhaps when these two actors watch Aamir’s PK they should definitely take home these lessons from the film;
Lesson no. 1 – Less is More
Less was definitely more for PK. Remember all that chatter about how there was no buzz about PK, media circles were buzzing with talk how Aamir is overconfident and perhaps taking a huge risk by underselling the film. There were no TV appearances, no front page interviews, no daily soap cameos, no college visits. Aamir took the road less travelled and instead decided to let the film speak for itself. Leaving the audience hungry and craving for more.
Lesson no. 2 – Director is the boss
There is no doubt in our minds that Raju Hirani is a genius storyteller and a brilliant director. Aamir let Raju do his thing. PK has that unmissable Hirani stamp on every scene. The writing, dialogues, humor, character sketches, everything resonates Raju Hirani. Unlike other films that came this year that sailed on the name of its lead star, PK had two stars – Aamir Khan and Raju Hirani. Two giants who were extremely secure and confident about their project. Hirani is infamous for being media shy, not giving interviews and refusing to succumb to the marketing gimmicks. Fortunately he didn’t crumble under peer pressure and let PK speak for itself.
Lesson no. 3 – Keep them guessing!
Is he an aline, is he playing God, no he’s just a regular village bumpkin. Days before release, every one had their own PK theory. In between lunch breaks, in local trains, colleges, canteens, on Whatsapp, everyone proclaimed they new the film and its ending. We admit we played spoilsport and told you first about Aamir’s alient act (embedd that link), but this guessing game worked majorly in favour of the film. We were left guessing till the very last minute, until the opening frame in fact till that spaceship lands we were clueless about Aamir’s role in PK.
Lesson no. 4 – No sex, No Violence, No abusing
Raju Hirani’s films work because they are family entertainers. You can watch them multple times with your family without cringing or wanting to skip a certain scene. There is no blood shed, no violence, no sexual innuendos or abusive language. PK doesn’t have a single moment where you will want to look away or feel weird about watching a particular scenes. In a day of Babydolls and Chaar Botal Vodkas, PK’s Love is a time of waste (bhaste!) is a simple tune that you can tap your feet to. His films break records because they are clean family entertainers that have high recall value.
Lesson no 5 – Don’t need controversy
Aamir Khan didn’t need any controversy to sell PK. In fact he didn’t want to sell the film at all. If he had his way he would have tweeted through the pre-release days and begged people to go into theatres to watch the film on December 19. Aamir was honest and sincere in his approach about marketing PK. He didn’t want to trick or con his audience into coming and watching the film. His sincerity has been richly rewarded with the film being welcomed across the country with open arms!
So Shah Rukh and Salman, we love you and we enjoyed Happy New Year as well as Kick. But we are sorry to admit, 2014 belongs to Aamir Khan. He came like a tailender who hit a six and brought this box-office match to a finish!
