Raju Hirani’s flick stomps authority at box office, leaving this week’s releases running for cover
TGIF! The day when new films arrive at the theatres to enthrall us. And this Friday, we have Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly clashing with Hindi dubbed version of Rajinikanth’s Lingaa. But the both the films don’t pose much threat to each other, as they would be fighting to save their neck against the might of Aamir Khan’s PK, which is running housefull all over the nation.
We hear that PK’s overwhelming success has made it very difficult for Lingaa and Ugly to find enough screens for a decent showing. A distributor claimed,” Why should we give up ‘PK’ when every show is going full? Even in the chilly winter nights we are getting full houses for ‘PK’ in the night shows. ‘Ugly‘ may be a good film. But it doesn’t look like the kind of film people want to see during the festive week of Christmas and New Year. As for ‘Lingaa’, it has already flopped in Tamil. We aren’t releasing it in Hindi in Bihar.”
“We are struggling to get screens. But it’s difficult. The year has been bad for the trade. The exhibitors won’t let go shows of ‘PK’ for a new film”, said a source close to Kashyap’s Ugly. Can Lingaa and Ugly hold their fort, while PK continues to rule the box office? Only time will tell.
