Going by the reviews his latest directorial venture has garnered, we certainly think the Rowdy Rathore director should stay away from the masala entertainer genre for a long long time…
Ace choreographer-turned-director Prabhu Deva has undoubtedly tasted success a filmmaker. But his latest release Action Jackson starring Ajay Devgn and his lucky mascot Sonakshi Sinha in the lead hasn’t managed to impress the critics wee bit. And we all know, more often than not, the masses also have the same opinion as critics. So don’t be surprised if Ajay-Sona starrer doesn’t rake in big moolah at the box office. But that’s not merely an issue as some films do well and some don’t. The real problem is the fact that Prabhu Deva has stuck to his tired-and-tested formula forever. His last film R…Rajkumar with Shahid Kapoor and Ms Sinha was in the similar space and it fared averagely at the box office. His only film in the action-drama genre which really got cash registers jingling was his 2012 directorial project Rowdy Rathore featuring Akshay Kumar and of course Sona.
While we love to see action, naach-gaana and romance, all bundled in one film, Bollywood surely has come a long way and today its safe to say that its the script which is the hero in a film. When Karan Johar, whose films have always been larger than life, can direct a film like Bombay Talkies, it just shows how filmmakers are willing to take a risk and not walk down the same conventional path. Not just filmmakers, even actors are going out of their way to do different kinds of films. Didn’t Deepika Padukone star in Finding Fanny?
So at a juncture where every artist in Bollywood is wanting to try something new, Prabhu Deva has doled out a film which is identical to his earlier projects. It’s high time for him to move out of his comfort zone and try his hand at a different genre. Yes, recently he said in an interview that he would love to direct a horror film. Well, we hope he does because we know he is supremely talented, its only matter of coming up with a script which has a good story!
