As we come to the end of an eventful year, we look back at some of the Bollywood’s iconic personalities who soared the popularity charts thanks to their onscreen charisma and off screen events which grabbed headlines. With over 7 B-town actors to choose from, we give you an opportunity to pick your celebrity of the year

The time of the year has arrived when we bid adieu to the year that was and welcome the year that could be, with open arms. 2014 has been a great year for Bollywood with new kids in the block competing neck to neck with the established stars. While I acknowledge the fact that an actor should be judged by his/her films, in an era where cinema is a ruthless money making business, it is not enough just to be a good actor. It is important to be a good celebrity, who can make an impact on the minds of the masses, with their onscreen as well as off screen commitments. It’s time to cut to the chase and unravel the list of B-town celebs, who had a fruitful 2014, who’s onscreen and off screen antics kept them in the news, making them immensely popular.

Sunny Leone

From the resounding success of Ragini MMS 2 to conquering the south on her debut to becoming the most searched Indian celebrity of the year on Google beating Narendra Modi and Salman Khan, the Baby Doll of Bollywood, Sunny Leone has had a fantastic 2014. Not only did she scorched the big screen with her oomph in Ragini MMS 2, which proved to be a game changer for Sunny, she also made her TV debut, co-hosting Mtv’s Splitsvilla. After featuring in an item song in Tamil film Vadacurry and palying a cameo in her Telugu debut Current Theega, her sex appeal seems to have worked wonders in South as filmmakers are queing up to sign the sexy siren.

Shahid Kapoor

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. With a string of flops under his belt, it was high time for Shahid to redeem himself and boy! did he do it in some style. There were lots of hopes from Shahid’s only film of the year, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider, and neither the actor nor the film disappointed. Playing the delusioned Kashmiri youth, who is torn between his love for his mother and revenge for his father’s death, Shahid Kapoor gave a stellar performance in Bhardwaj’s Hamlet adaptation. Going bald for his role, Shahid pushed the boundaries as an actor and his performance in Haider is considered to be one of the finest in recent times.

Alia Bhatt

Who would have thought that the one film old Alia Bhatt, who made her debut in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year, will go on to enjoy an extremely fruitful 2014. Not only did she silence her critics with her breath taking performance in Imtiaz Ali’s Highway, she was also a part of two Rs 100 crore films, 2 States and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. That’s not it! Alia went on to make a self mockery of her dumb image as she collaborated with All India Bakchod to dish out an extremely hilarious video, Alia Bhatt-Genius of the Year. It takes a lot of courage to laugh at yourself and Alia certainly won our hearts by being such a sport.

Aamir Khan

Through out the year 2014, Aamir Khan stayed away from limelight. But during the season of Christmas, just like last year, AK donned the Santa hat as he gifted his fans a gem of film called PK. Collaborating with Raju Hirani after 3 Idiots, Aamir’s endearing performance as alien from outer space, who questions the inanities of religions, is heart warming, putting a bright smile on your face. After watching PK, I believe everyone will agree that no one but AK could have pulled off the role so effortlessly. Also the socially responsible star addressed important issues through his show, Satyamev Jayate, which was trending on twitter and other social media.

Priyanka Chopra

Other than setting your hearts racing with that mesmerising smile, hottie Priyanka Chopra, has had tremendous year so far. 2014 started with a bang for PC, who along side Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh delivered a big hit, Gunday. Later on, Priyanka went to give a gritty performance as the five time gold medallist Mary Kom in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Mary Kom. Her portrayal of Mary Kom won her praises and accolades from all corner. She has two big films in her kitty – Dil Dhadakne Do and Bajirao Mastani, which are expected to hit the screens on 2015. Other than her filmi commitments, PC showed the way by cleaning the streets of Mumbai as part of Modi’s Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan. Priyanka left every Indian pleasantly surprised and beaming with pride when she signed a deal with ABC studios to star in an upcoming American television series.

Ranveer Singh

It has been an mixed bag at box office for Ranveer Singh this year. While Gunday set the cash registers ringing, Kill Dil, surprisingly failed at box office. But in both the films, the actor was lauded for his energetic performances. Ranveer, also did something this year, which no actor has ever dared to do – endorse a condom brand. At the start of the year, Ranveer left everyone awestruck when he featured in Do The Rex ad, winning millions of hearts with his confidence and style. On world aids day, Ranveer appeared in Rex Talk ad, where he encouraged everyone to talk freely about sex, stating there is nothing taboo about it. His reply to Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang Dare was epic, as he danced on busy streets of Mumbai in Krrish suit, as the video went on to become viral. Ranveer is also one of the very few actors in B-town, who are ready to go great lengths for their role, as Ranveer shaved his head for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani.

Deepika Padukone

From being superstar Rajinikanth’s heroine in Kochadaiiyaan to giving an applaud worthy performance in Homi Adjania’s Finding Fanny to playing colourful character in Shah Rukh Khan’s Happy New Year, Deepika Padukone has had a good year at the big screen. Playing a pivotal character in Finding Fanny, Deepika looked extremely comfortable spouting her lines in English, rubbing shoulders with greats like Naseerudin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. But, it was her bold reply to a leading daily’s cheap trick to gain publicity using her old cleavage video, that made her the talk of the town. With support pouring from all corners, everyone lauded Deepika’s firm stand on sexist remarks and objectification of women in our society.

Based on the overall popularity that the actor has gained from films and more, who do you think should be awarded the Celebrity of the Year 2014?
