No year is complete without watching a few Tamil films for anyone who appreciates Indian cinema. This year was no exception as there were many releases from big budget to small budget – but a few captured the imaginations of the audience and critics alike. Here are a few that no one would have missed or can forget this year. What is your favourite Tamil film? Vote now!Lingaa: Director K S Ravikumar’s film with Superstar Rajinikanth, after his four year hiatus from cinema, opened to mixed reviews. But the movie made a stunning Rs 16 crore on the first day at the box office and went on to make Rs 100 crore at the box office three days – a first in Tamil cinema! Romancing Anushka and Sonakshi Sinha in a double role, Rajinikanth as Lingaa was a fun watch and he had people whistling and clapping for more. Santhanam and Karuna provided the comic factor here. Lingaa may have been old wine in an old bottle but with Superstar in it, who really cares what the movie is about is the audience’s opinion.
Veeram: Ajith came as Vinayagam in Veeram and with four brothers to watch over, played the serious, protective and strict elder brother to a T. With Santhanam to raise a few laughs, Veeram was the perfect Pongal sweet for the audience. The storyline by Siva wasn’t new but with Thala taking the lead, it gave the film a new twist as it was refreshing to see Ajith move to a village-based script from the urban ones he was doing.
Kaththi: Ilayathapathy Vijay’s Kaththi was plagued by controversies before the release. But the movie overcame all obstacles and released to become a superhit. A movie that made it to the Rs 100 crore club, A R Murugadoss’ Kaththi saw Vijay play a double role (a petty criminal and a common man). Samantha played the pretty heroine, Ankitha, while Sathish was the comic factor in the film as Vijay’s friend. The movie just completed 50 days in theatres.
Vellailla Pattathaari: Another box office hit this year is Dhanush’s Vellailla Pattathaari directed by Velraj. Essaying the role of Raghuvaran, an unemployed engineering grad who falls in love with the neighbour’s daughter, played by Amala Paul, Dhanush was superb. His dancing and singing skills were also showcased well in the film. Vivek came in as the comedian for this film. The romance between Amala Paul and Dhanush was underplayed and the movie’s songs still continue to rock the music charts.
Jigarthanda: One movie that was the surprise package in Kollwyood in 2014 and a hit is Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda. An action gangster film starring Siddharth, Bobby Simha and Lakshmi Menon, this movie was the talk of the town. A young AD who wants to make a film on a gangster goes to study one in Madurai and how he gets drawn into that world is the storyline. Ace directors and actors from Mani Ratnam to Shankar and Superstar Rajinikanth have applauded this breakthrough film in Tamil cinema.
