There’s a new detective series in the market and here’s what we think about it
Star Plus has launched a new show that replaced the singing reality show Raw Star. Now the basic concept is somehow a concocted version of series like, The Mentalist, Psyche, Castle and Sherlock, but it hasn’t been able to match up that.
Story
Every episode will talk about a new murder in town that only Raffe manages to solve in tow with a few wasted cops. The show begins with Raffe Roy Choudhary’s mother, Anita Roy Choudhary (Sandhya Mridul) running away from something or someone. She literally blows up her past to protect her future. In order to keep the young Raffe engrossed, she gives him puzzles to solve. 18 years later, Raffe has solved every puzzle he can think of and his latest fetish is to study the human puzzle. Just by looking at a person, Raffe is able to tell his profession, what he does and sometime even what he is thinking. No it is not magic, but mere observation. He assists Inspector Tiwari (Vrajesh Hirjee) on his first case and solves it with precision in no time; gaining the trust of the cops is half battle one. Every episode will help him solve cases that will finally help him solve the puzzle of his own life.
What’s Good
We’ve seen crime thriller shows like Karamchand, Byomkesh Bakshi, Tehkikaat, Raja Aur Rancho eons ago and for the longest time until now there have been no interesting crime based thrillers unless you count CID as one among them. Private Investigator comes as a breath of fresh air, just when we needed a change. It is great to see talented actors like Sandhya Mridul and Aamir Bashir back on the small screen. The young hot mom played by Sandhya is interesting and perfect for her age. Aamir’s character is still a mystery, which keeps us intrigued. Mrinal Dutt, who plays the lead role, looks perfect for the character and does a decent job too.
What’s Bad
Freemantle Media didn’t seem to invest much on this show. The production value seems rather low which is easily noticeable with the sets and props used. They’ve tried to keep it as real as possible but they seem lost trying to ape the western shows and keeping it Indian. If you are fans of Sherlock like us, you will notice how the makers have used a similar technique in the show to connect the dots between the crime and killer. After two episodes, we can confidently say that the stories lack the punch and mystery feel to it. The plot needs to be as clear and confusing at the same time.
Verdict
Private Investigator has the potential to be something really interesting. For now the series is just about average with really nothing too interesting or out of the world.
