Here’s the latest trouble that the superstar’s upcoming magnum opus has run into….
Kochadaiiyaan, Rajinikanth’s last release, was a disaster. The movie was unable to recover its money and many distributors went into losses. Now it seems those losses have come back to haunt Rajinikanth’s upcoming release Lingaa. Our little birdies inform us that Lingaa’s theatrical rights are yet to be sold in Kerala and thus it might not release in the state on the slated December 12 date. Also, the other southern states may follow suit. So why are the distributors boycotting the film? We wonder…
Our khabroos inform us that the Kerala distributors’ association has informed all the members of its union to not buy the rights for Lingaa. The reason they stated is that there is a huge pending debt that the makers of Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiiyaan need to pay them. So in order to get that cleared up asap, they should boycott distributing Lingaa. The association points out that due to Rajinikanth’s last film, may distributors faced immense losses and went out of business because the film got delayed a lot and even on release, failed to create any impact at the box office. So maybe if Rajinikanth gets Kochadaiiyaan makers pay some compensation to the out-of-work distributors and get them back in business, Lingaa might see a release in Kerala. The Plaza Group, which had acquired the distribution and exhibition rights for Kochadaiiyaan, had spent astronomical amounts for the film’s promotion but all went down the drain as the motion capture flick failed to create any buzz among fans and critics.
Grapevine has it that the Lingaa makers are trying to sort out the issue and get the film a release in Kerala. They are worried that if Kerala doesn’t release the film, other states too might soon follow suit, which will be a huge blow to the Rajinikanth film.
Kannada producer Rockline Venkatesh is producing Lingaa and the entire distribution has been taken up by Eros International at a whopping Rs 120 crore. Lingaa will release on Rajinikanth’s birthday. It will be opening on 5000 screens which is the biggest for any Kollywood flick ever. A lot of hopes are pinned on the success of the film and we too expect the movie to have a smooth release everywhere. Hai na guys ?
