This year we saw a lot of our chocolate boy heroes showing off their violent streak. While the trend of lover boys turning blood thirsty seems to be catching up, we take a look at the new age angry young men of B-town!
Bloodshot eyes. Intimidating body language. Clenched fists. Majestic gait. And of course powerful baritone. These were the characteristics which made superstar Amitabh Bachchan as the the angry young man of Bollywood in late 70s and 80s. Now after almost two and a half decades, Bollywood seems to be catching up with hardcore no-mercy action fever, as yesteryear’s angry young man paves way to new age angry young men of B-town.
Here is a list of chocolate boy heroes who have gone through image makeover, sending a shivers down our spine with their blood thirsty streak:
Shahid Kapoor in Haider
Ever since the inception of his career, he has been considered as perfect cast for mushy romantic flicks thanks to his boy next door looks. Though Shahid showed his action chops in critically acclaimed Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey, it was in Bhardwaj’s 2014 film Haider where Shahid left everyone dumbstruck with his amazing transformation. Going bald in this Hamlet adaptation, Shahid shocked the audience with his portrayal of a character who descends into madness seeking revenge for his father’s death. Pulling cold blooded violent scenes showcasing pure vengeance, Shahid is the epitome of angry young men of present era.
Sidharth Malhotra in Ek Villain
It takes a lot of courage to play a character with eminent grey shade in the early stages of your career. But Sidharth Malhotra was not only up for the challenge, but also emerged successful with his portrayal of wicked merciless killer who gets transformed after falling in love. Yes, we are talking about Sidharth’s much appreciated role in Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain, which shattered all the misconceptions that Sid can pull off only chocolate lover boy roles. Be it his cold eyes, brooding demeanour or power packed punches, the way Sid turned into a the re0venge seeking killing machine made people sit up and take notice.
Varun Dhawan in Badlapur
After doing romantic comedies like Main Tera Hero and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Varun Dhawan’s ultra violent avatar in Sriram Raghavan’s Badlapur was something out of the blue, leaving us surprised as Varun showed us this new dark face that was hidden beneath the boyish cute visage. Badlapur teaser gave a strong evidence of how violent, angry, gory and blood thirsty Varun can turn into. With nothing but revenge on his mind, Varun’s angry young man avatar is not to be missed when Badlapur hits the screens on February 2015.
Arjun Kapoor in Tevar
Here is a guy who has not shied away from kickass action ever since the start of his career. Be it is villainous smile in Ishaqzaade or badass action avatar in Gunday or character with grey shades in Aurangazeb, Arjun Kapoor has established himself as one of the front runners for angry young man title. After doing a romantic flick 2 States and a slice of life, quaint film, Finding Fanny, Arjun is back to his roots, putting on his action hero cape as he bashes villains left, right and centre in hardcore action flick Tevar.
Out of these four, who do you think should be crowned as angry young man of Bollywood?
