Tevar starring Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpai has generated a lot of interest amongst the movie buffs, thanks to the alleged offscreen romance between Arjun and Sona. The remake of Telugu superhit Okkadu, produced by Sanjay Kapoor, has been widely publicised, with the Superman song topping the charts. After giving the B-town a new adjective ( Tevarrific) to cling on, the music by composers Sajid Wajid is finally out.
While Superman, Radha Nachegi,Lets Celebrate and Joganiyan are already out, all heard and liked by all. But now let me take you through a quick tour of the album and see if Tevar’s music hits right on the money or not.
Superman
The album kicks off with the extremely catchy Superman song. Sung by Wajid, the mild dance number is a perfect start to the album which showcases the bindaas attitude of our hero. The composition from Sajid Wajid is a right mix of techno beats combined with rhythmic metallic clangs which give a fresh sound to the song. The vocals of Wajid is fun, energetic and easy on the ears. Lyrics by Sajid, Kausar Munir and Danish Sabri is quirky and hits bang on target with the young and restless. And adding the Salman Khan reference in the song is a masterstroke as Bhai’s name guarantees the song being an instant hit. And if you think Superman song isn’t fast paced enough for you to dance, hear the remix version as it will surely get into the groove in party fever.
Radha Nachegi
The next song in Tevar album is Sonakshi Sinha’s introduction song, Radha Nachegi. Sung by Ritu Pathak, this fusion of classical folk with western beats by Sajid Wajid falls flat on your face. While the vocals of Ritu Pathak is unique, I feel Radha Nachegi is not the right song for her as she renders classical portions of the song with panache but falters badly when song picks up pace. Somehow, the music and vocals don’t seem to be in sync, giving a very strange feel to the song. The song opens well with refreshing vocals of Ms Pathak, but all hell breaks loose when electric guitar and drum beats are introduced, ruining the flavour of what could have been nice melodious song. The lyrics are good but the inclusion of the words like ‘music bajega loud’ in devotional sounding number seem out of place.
Lets Celebrate
Dutch Pakistani singer Imran Khan makes his Bollywood entry with this ultra cool party number Lets Celebrate. Composed, written and sung by Imran Khan, the song has foot tapping music filled with techno beats and funky sounds to keep you hooked. The song has a very western pop feel to it and Imran Khan’s voice stays with you long after the song is over. Lets Celebrate is the next party anthem which Bollywood was waiting for. I would be surprised if Lets Celebrate is not on the playlist of every New Year’s party this year.
Joganiyan
In a film with real life couple Arjun and Sona paired together onscreen, I know you are eagerly waiting for a romantic song which touches your heart featuring the lead pair. Sadly, Joganiyan doesn’t fall under the regular romantic number as it is too intense at times to be called as soul stirring number. Sung beautifully by Shruti Haasan, Joganiyan is an intense song on love composed by Sajid Wajid. While the song sounds odd during listening for the first time, the semi melancholic track grows on you. The point where the track goes heavy with electric guitar riffs and Shruti Haasan’s high pitched vocals seems to be forced. After hearing four songs of the album, I feel Sajid Wajid are trying too hard to infuse energy in each and every composition by adding jarring western musical instruments.
Madamiyan
And for those who are wondering where is Shruti Haasan’s item number, well it is here. Madamiyan sung by Mika Singh and Mamta Sharma is a catchy dance number with perfect combination of fun vocals of Mika and Mamta along with some crazy lyrics and skilful composition of Sajid Wajid. The song perfectly fuses folk desi beats with western techno beats, trumpets and many more percussion instruments. While the song is no Munni Badnaam hui from Dabangg, nevertheless is a very engaging song which would make you want to groove along with it.
Main Nai Jaana Pardes
Finally the soulful romantic number has arrived. But is it up to the mark? Not exactly. Main Nai Jaana Pardes sung melodiously by Shafqat Amanat Ali, starts off with slow guitar riffs paving way to soulful vocals and classical style music with table and flute. The high point of the song is when the tempo of music is suddenly upped matched wonderfully by Shafqat Amanat Ali. Though the song is melodious and easy on the years, it demands multiple hearings to actually grow on you.
Tevarrific Mashup
This mixture of Madamiyan and Radha Nachegi is a unnecessary addition to the album as not much has been changed to the renditions except addition of some loud club beats. Though Arjun’s dialogue at the start of the mashup is refreshing to hear.
Verdict: Sajid Wajid’s music for Tevar is a mixed bag. While few songs come off as bizarre and mediocre, numbers like Superman and Lets Celebrate redeem the album. But looking at the album as whole, Tevar works in bits and pieces, as it disappointed me with uneven fusion of desi and techno beats.
Our Pick: Superman, Lets Celebrate, Madamiyan
