Last year in October 2014, Burka Avenger, the famous and multi-award winning animated series directed and created by Aaron Haroon Rashid was nominated for Emmy awards. The series stars the super talented "Ainy Jaffri" and "Hamza Ali Abbasi" as the vocals of Jiya (the burka avenger) and Baba Bandook respectively.
Burka Avenger was nominated under the category of Kid’s animation for the International Emmy Awards presented by IATAS. This is the first Pakistani animation series to be recognized in Kids Award. Not to forget that this series has previously won several awards including Pea-body Award 2013, Gender Equity Prize and Rising star award in the animation category at The Canada International Film Festival.
All the members associated with this series attended this big event except "Hamza Ali Abbasi", a very important vocalist of the series. Initially he chose to remain silent about it, but later he reveled the reason behind his absence on a social networking site. The reason behind it, as he said was the “Western hypocrisy”.
"Hamza Abbasi" said that it was very unfair to give the Human rights awards to a journalist who was campaigning against the enforcement of Hijab in Iran instead of the ones who are fighting against the European ban on Hijab. He didn’t comment much on whether the Iranian journalist campaign was justified or not, but the fact that angered him was that she was picked and celebrated. He further added that “western hypocrisy has reached a new low, but the more tragic part is how many of us defend this hypocrisy”.
Do you standby this stance of "Hamza"? And so you think not attending the event was the right thing to do? Leave your comments below and stay tuned to showbiz Pakistan for more updates.
