Discounts are always tempting for every consumer. There are also many people who wait for sales so that they can do their shopping on discounted prices. Sales help both the consumer and the retailer. The consumer gets discount and the retailer gets to sell his product to the maximum people some of whom cannot afford it at normal price. Just like any other country in the world there have always been sales in Pakistan too but lately these sales have taken a turn which is keeping many of the women who avoid confrontation especially away from outlets when there is sale. The reason for this is the two videos from sales in Sapphire in Lahore and Agha Noor in Karachi.
These two videos are shocking for many people because we see women fighting for clothes like they cannot afford to buy clothes at a normal price. The craze for designer clothes and the race to wear the best designs has turned women into people who sometimes can do anything to get the design they want. It was reported that in the Agha Noor Sale in Karachi not only was their door broken down but some women fractured their bones also in the struggle to enter the outlet.
While it is true that women should have more sense than to fight over discounted clothes like it is a matter of life and death. It is also true that these stores do not handle the situation properly. The first and biggest problem is that both these brands have only one store in an entire city so there will be a large crowd there even in routine. Second problem is that these stores also get greedy and they allow too many people inside the shop. They can avoid the crowd and the craziness that ensues by letting a certain number of customers in the shop and letting the others wait. It should be on first come, first serve basis. One more point to be noted is that while the Sapphire video has clearly been made by a random customer, the second Agha Noor video looks like it was planned. There was someone already there in the shop waiting to make the video. This is a cheap way to gain publicity and it is also invasion of people’s privacy. Not everyone wants to be seen on every single social media page and even television. Women went there to do shopping and not to be part of a publicity stunt.
These outlets and these crazy shoppers are not doing anyone a favor by doing what they are doing because any decent customer now will stay away from these outlets during sale. This publicity stunt is not being appreciated by anyone. Stores should not have sales if they can’t manage them well and there should be some accountability for the customers too.
