Youth taking antidepressants are more suicidal - 30 April 2014

Modern research revealed that the young adults who take high-doses of antidepressants have more risks of suicidal behaviour.

The study results released after thorough investigation of almost 162,000 people; surprisingly the younger aged 24 declared having more self-destructive behaviour as compare to those who took standard doses of SSRI pills.

Antidepressants such as Prozac and Seroxat helped double the risks of creating suicidal behaviour amongst the youngers, US researchers say.

On the other hand, suicidal risks in older adults were seen lower during the student who started taking antidepressants.

Experts at Harvard School of Public Health, Boston concluded the investigative study on effect of antidepressants known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, Daily Mail reported.

The researchers suggested doctors to avoid prescribing high doses for young adults and monitor them closely for several months, because the benefits of medication for youngsters suffering depression are ‘modest’.
