Pakistan cable operators plans to protest against Geo and Jang network - 17 May 2014

KARACHI: Cable Operators Association of Pakistan (COAP) has decided to protest against embattled Geo and Jang network as it disrupted COAP’s press conference and office.

Talking to media on Friday night, COAP’s president Khalid Araeen said, “We have decided to hold protest demonstrations against the hooliganism of the media group, which must be banned immediately for hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims.”

He also believes in the ‘Fatwa’ given by religious scholars and asked fellow operators to act according to their conscience.

“According to a fatwa (religious edict) issued by the top clerics of Pakistan, watching Geo TV is haram (forbidden or sinful) and COAP will not become a part of anything that was against the teachings of Islam,” vowed Araeen.

And added, “The cable operators should decide on it keeping in view their moral, ethical, and religious duties. Let their conscience be their guide.”

He also mentioned the network’s ill behavior at Karachi Press Club (KPC) and COAP’s office.

“The way the media group’s ruffians bullied the COAP office bearers and vandalized the press club shows Geo TV has lost its nerve. It’s a pity that Geo TV just cannot practice what it preaches,” said Araeen.

Geo and Jang network have once again come under fire due to Wednesday’s show of Utho Jago Pakistan hosted by Shaista Wahidi, where religious sentiments of many were hurt.

Earlier, the media group faced heat for an alleged campaign against Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief for attacking Hamid Mir in Karachi.
