Shaad Ali’s much-talked about directorial venture Kill Dil has finally hit the theatres and though the trailers looked mighty promising, the film hasn’t really lived-up to the expectations. Read the full review of Kill Dil and you’ll know whether to watch it or skip it…
What’s it about
Dev (Ranveer Singh) and Tutu (Ali Zafar) are best buddies who end up being mentored by Bhaiyaji (Govinda). They grow up to become sharp shooters and work for Bhaiyaji. Though he is like a father figure for them, at the end its all about business. While Tutu is oh-so-serious and no nonsense guy, Dev is exactly opposite of him. Things are great until Disha (Parineeti Chopra) makes an entry. She is filthy rich and falls for the bad guy. Yes, we are talking about Dev. Unaware of his profession, Disha falls hard for Dev. That’s when the latter realises that he needs to stop killing people and clean up his act. He has to make a choice between Kill or Dil and he obviously goes for the second option. But this doesn’t go down well Bhaiyaji and that’s when twists and turns take place. Well, you need to watch the film to know what exactly happens in the end!
What’s good
It’s a delight to see Govinda on the big screen once again. Though he is playing a baddie, you get to see his funny side and of course his moves. He has indeed played his part well and stands out despite having less screen time. Another actor who makes Kill Dil worth watching is Ranveer Singh. While the B-town hunk has played many tough characters, in Kill Dil his role isn’t intense or demanding. In fact, he is the one who brings in bit of humour with his antics. One would expect a sharp shooter to be khadus or macho but Singh is cute and lovable. And you do get to see that in his performance. Lastly, music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is beautiful. I totally loved Sajde and the title track.
What’s bad
Shaad Ali’s film has too many elements – romance, action, bromance and naach-gaana. In one word its just ‘chaotic’. In fact, there are so many songs in the film that after a point I felt I was watching a music channel. Yes, the songs are good but having one in every 15 minutes is definitely a turn off. Coming to the story, well, its nothing new or fresh. Though the film is funny in bits and pieces, overall it failed to pack a punch. While the first half was watchable, in seemed the makers dragged the second half too much. Also, the plot is predictable and there were too many moments where I felt I should just concentrate on my popcorn and coffee. Performance wise, Govinda and Ranveer were watchable not because of their roles but what they brought on to the table as actors. As for Parineeti Chopra and Ali Zafar, the two hardly have anything to do in the film. You do get to see Ms Chopra in a new avatar and its refreshing. However, the B-town beauty did seem quite uncomfortable at times while dancing in western clothes. I do think Kill Dil would have been worth watching had Shaad given all of his actors more meatier roles especially Govinda considering his caliber.
Verdict
I went in with too much expectations came out disappointed. So if you’re planning to watch this film at all then don’t expect anything and maybe you won’t regret walking into the theater!
