As celebs flooded the social media paying their last respects to KB, the fans are in deep mourning for the irrevocable loss which world of cinema has suffered. We take a fond look back at his impressive body of work and hand pick a few gems which brought out the best of K Balachander:

Moondru Mudichu

There is no one better in the industry who could handle a complex web of emotions as brilliantly as KB could. With Moodru Mudichu, Balachander brought the troika of super talented actors together for the first time – Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Sridevi, telling a story that was light years ahead of it’s time. With a bold subject, Balachander explored the underlying emotions of humans which are hidden behind the fake exterior demeanour. Moondru Mudichu, a tale about a girl’s revenge for the loss of her love, is certainly stuff of legend.

Maro Charitra

This classic love story of cross cultural romance starring Kamal Haasan and Saritha features one of the finest works of KB. Though the story may seem ordinary, of a Tamil boy falling in love with a Telugu girl, it is the tragic treatment of the story which makes Maro Charitra a memorable film. This Telugu flick was later remade into EK Duje Ke Liye starring Kamal Haasan and Rati Agnihotri was again directed by Balachander himself.

Thillu Mullu

This Tamil remake of Amol Palekar’s Golmal starring Rajinikanth and Tenga Srinivasan, is yet another cult classic dished out by Balachander. Thillu Mullu established Rajinikanth as an actor with great comic potential, something which was not explored till then. Rajini gives a fantastic performance bringing the house down with his antics, but it was the invisible hand of Balachander that guided superstar to deliver a power packed performance.

Sindhu Bhairavi

Sindhu Bhairavi, was not only a fantastic musical, with songs soaring to great popularity, it was also a K Balachander film which explored complexities of human relationships to the very core. The film starring Sivakumar, Suhasini and Sulakshana tells a tale of a great musician who turns alcoholic after the ending things with a beloved. How his wife tries to save him from falling in the deep abyss of addiction with help of his beloved forms the crux of the story.

Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu

The film starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi is another Balachander classic which depicts struggles of an educated youth to get an employment. The film is also a social commentary which covers several norms of Indian society. While Kamal-Sridevi chemistry takes away the limelight from most films, Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu has K Balachander’s trademark signature written all over it.

Apnatvzone mourns along with millions of KB fans and hope the soul of the great man rests in peace.
